Tweens: It's All About Her Hair

Have you noticed lately that when your tween looks in the mirror (any mirror!), she is usually checking out her hair? She is also probably starting to comment on your hair and talks about the way her friends are wearing their hair.

Hair specialists say that at this age, our children have the highest number of hair follicles producing hair. This is also when their pigment-producing cells have started working although are not fully mature, so their hair color will likely get darker as they become teenagers.

I share this because I am looking for a reason that it is suddenly all about tween hair care.  This is not bad news, in fact it’s that independence we all keep fostering and, well, part of growing up.

Have you noticed the satisfaction your tween daughter has when she creates her own hair style? After years of you doing her hair, she now has the confidence and the dexterity to make her own style–okay, maybe not braids-yet, but she can now manage her own tresses.

At the moment, my tween is in love with the top knot. She has never seen a fashion magazine or models on a runway, but she most definitely can gather all of her hair, deftly  use her fingers to wrap the elastic of her chosing, and toss her head with utmost confidence.   As I watch her do this, I am thrilled she is beginning to find a comfort level with her own sense of style.  I am also so glad she has chosen a hair style that pulls her hair off her face (thank goodness!)  Hair being off her face is great for her skin, eliminates distraction and minimizes fidgeting.  Given how active  my daughter is, the hairtsyle she has selected is her very own smart choice.

Of course, the cute bows I selected for her when she was younger have had to make room for the bright head bands, irridescent-colored clips, and patterned elastics that are now the fashion accessories of her choice.

One of the best accessories for tween hair care and still my daughter’s favorite is Ottilie & Lulu Detangler & Conditioner. The thick rich formula is similar to what you find in hair salons.  The detangler makes tangles a non-issue.  My tween can comb through her wet hair easily.  And the conditioner leaves her hair manageable–just the way SHE likes it.

Ah, yes, well if it is all about her hair, it’s tween hair care at its best!
